Progressive Conservative Healthcare critic Karla MacFarlane today called on the Liberals to convene an emergency meeting of the Standing Committee on Health to examine and discuss the recent Nurses’ Union recommendations.
“Nurses have identified problems and provided solutions, and as elected officials, we have a responsibility to examine them,” says MacFarlane. “When we are in the middle of a health care crisis, this report can’t be shelved.”
MacFarlane hopes that both the NDP and Liberal committee members support her call to add a meeting to discuss the report.
“There are 35 recommendations to improve the healthcare system in this report, and they deserve the attention of the Healthcare Committee,” says MacFarlane. “Nova Scotians are crying out for solutions, given the state of healthcare in Nova Scotia, there is no time to waste. We can’t afford to ignore these recommendations, some of which have been contributed by front-line professionals.”
MacFarlane has written a letter to Ms. Suzanne Lohnes-Croft, Vice-Chair, Standing Committee of the Legislature on Health to request an emergency meeting to be scheduled on Wednesday, May 29th, 2019.
She recommended that Ms. Janet Hazelton, President of the Nova Scotia Nurses Union, Coleen Logan, Nova Scotia Nurses Union, and the authors of the report, Paul Curry, PhD, Justin Hiltz, MSc and Ashley Buckle, BScN, RN. all be called as witnesses.
