Education Minister Zack Churchill must put an end to the fear and confusion parents and teachers are feeling and explain school staffing changes instituted this week, Progressive Conservative MLA Tim Halman said today.
“The Minister has to clarify what is going on,” Halman said. “Parents and teachers are afraid Liberal changes will mean fewer supports for students who need them.”
PC MLAs have been hearing from teachers and parents that the Liberal government has made cuts to early literacy interventions, guidance, resource, reading recovery and support workers for new Canadians from Syria. However, Minister Churchill has not made any details public.
Last week, the Minister made an announcement that he said would build on the existing education system. This week, new information has left people feeling scared that existing supports are being diluted.
“Supports in classrooms can make or break a student’s academic experience and success,” Halman said. “Information about cuts is not something the Liberals should hide.”
