Cumberland South MLA Tory Rushton is pleased to hear that the Municipality of the County of Cumberland will be receiving a $50,000 contribution to rebuild the Mechanic Street playground.
Last year, the community was devastated when a fire destroyed the playground which was built with money raised by the community. It took the residents nearly 10 years to raise the funds.
“Local playgrounds play such an important role in communities. This one was meaningful because so many people played a part in making sure the kids in the area had somewhere to play. It was a devastating loss on so many levels,” says Rushton. “I’m very pleased that the province recognized the hard work and commitment of the community and contributed $50,000 for this important rebuild.”
The funding is coming from the Recreation Facility Development Grant Program. The program assists community groups, municipalities and other ‘not-for-profit’ organizations to develop facilities in order to increase public participation in sport and physical recreation. Rushton says he looks forward to seeing local children enjoying the new playground.
“I’m pleased to see that the municipal and provincial governments came together to work on this,” concludes Rushton.
