Darrell Dexter attempts to put 'Libel Chill' over illegal donation scandal
HALIFAX - Today the NDP are threatening legal action against small private broadcasters for airing ads produced by the PC Party of Nova Scotia. In a letter to the radio stations, the NDP are demanding the ads be pulled and a retraction and apology be aired by the radio station claiming the ads are defamatory.
"This is wrong." said Jeff Hunt, legal counsel for the PC Party, "The PC Party of Nova Scotia unreservedly stands by the content of that advertisement. The ads are factual."
"The PC Party believes attempting to silence political speech by 'libel chill' is a very serious thing." Hunt added.
In a written response to the radio stations Hunt states the NDP clearly accepted the funds which were not in compliance with Provincial law that makes them "illegal contributions" and that is the wording adopted in the ad.
Donation monies which violated provincial political funding legislation were forwarded to and initially accepted by the NDP. The donation of these funds violated provincial legislation. Upon this fact coming to light, a portion of the funds were returned by the NDP to the labour organizations involved.
