ANTIGONISH - Darren Thompson was confirmed as the candidate for the Progressive Conservatives at a meeting of over 150 local supporters at Antigonish's John Paul Centre last night.

Thompson, a physiotherapist and father of three, is well known in the sports community and has a long record of community service.

"I am pleased to accept this nomination," said Thompson. "I pledge that I will work hard to win this campaign and continue to work hard to make sure our communities are strongly represented in government."

Progressive Conservative leader Karen Casey said Thompson is the right choice for Antigonish.

"We are very proud to have Darren representing the Progressive Conservative Party," said Casey. "With his passion for the community and his involvement and proven commitment to it, he will be a valued addition to our caucus and to the people of Antigonish."

Several speakers addressed the audience and spoke of Thompson's achievements and leadership.

Thompson was nominated by Terry MacIntyre, President of the local Salmon Association, Denton Anthony, a St. F.X. business professor and Stephanie Bullock, a St. F.X. athlete.

His wife, Michelle Thompson, spoke of her husband's commitment to his family and community.
