ANTIGONISH, NS - Progressive Conservative candidate Darren Thompson expressed his disappointment today with the NDP government's refusal to support a new public library for Antigonish.
"Every other level of government has contributed to this project and the community has contributed but the provincial government is letting us down," said Thompson.
Thompson says that 70 per cent of the funding for the library is committed. The proposal has $3.2 million in committed funding from the federal government, the County of Antigonish and the Town of Antigonish . The community is expected to fundraise $250,000 for the project.
Thompson says the $1.8 million shortfall should be covered by the provincial government.
"The NDP government should show leadership on education and literacy and come to the table on the People's Place project," said Thompson. "By refusing to support this project, they are demonstrating that they are out of touch with the residents of Antigonish."
"I have three children in school and I know that this library would be of great value to the families in our communities," added Thompson. "I am extremely disappointed that the NDP government in Halifax does not feel the same way."
