GLACE BAY, NS - The Progressive Conservative Party will be represented by Michelle Wheelhouse in the June 22 by-election in Glace Bay.

Wheelhouse, a local employee with Veterans Affairs Canada, was confirmed as the Party’s candidate at a meeting Wednesday night at the Masonic Hall in Glace Bay.  She holds a degree in Community Studies from the University College of Cape Breton, a Certificate in Public Administration and is an Independent Marketing Executive with Melaleuca Incorporated.

Progressive Conservative leader Karen Casey said Wheelhouse is the right choice for Glace Bay.

"We are very proud to have Michelle representing the Progressive Conservative Party," said Casey. "With her passion for the community and her involvement and proven commitment to it, she will be a valued addition to our caucus and to the people of Glace Bay."

Casey and Wheelhouse noted that PC MLAs have been leading the charge on important Cape Breton issues like opening the Xstrata mine, the fishery, the future of freight rail service and the dredging of Sydney Harbour.

Wheelhouse added that Glace Bay voters are tired of old style politics and are looking for real change.

"The Liberals have taken Glace Bay for granted for the last 20 years.  Darrell Dexter and the NDP have made life harder for today's families in Glace Bay by raising taxes and breaking their promises on health care," added Wheelhouse. "If Glace Bay voters want positive change, I ask for their support so that we can work together to make things happen for local families.”

Casey is planning to campaign hard in the weeks ahead in Glace Bay with Cape Breton Progressive Conservative MLAs Alfie MacLeod, Cecil Clarke, Keith Bain and Allan MacMaster.

Casey also added that Wheelhouse has deep roots in Glace Bay and will be a strong voice for that constituency in the legislature.

"I would like to congratulate Michelle on her successful nomination," said Casey. "There is now much work to be done, and we look forward to continuing the tradition of strong Progressive Conservative representation in Cape Breton."
