HALIFAX, NS – Today in the Legislature, Northside-Westmount MLA Eddie Orrell pressed the Minister responsible for the Emergency Management Office, Zach Churchill, on when money from the disaster assistance program would be available to victims of the Thanksgiving flood.
“Victims of the Thanksgiving flood continue to feel abandoned by the Liberal government,” said Orrell. “It’s been a month since homeowners lost everything and the government has yet to provide a timeline on relief for families.”
To date, families have not received funding from the province’s disaster financial assistance program. Desperate homeowners are having to rely on private donations through a fundraising website called GoFundMe to get by. In response to Orrell’s questions today, the Minister said that the first cheque would be issued today.
Orrell says while some money has started to flow, it’s still not clear when all the victims will see the funding from the program.
“We will continue to demand answers from the McNeil government about when they will give the victims of the Thanksgiving flood the support they deserve,” says Orrell.
